Thinking of starting a Yoga practice? Here are some tips.

Yoga is everywhere! And there are so many different styles. Your mum might do it with her friends in the church hall, and the age range may not suit you, and equally your friend who has been going for years is always inviting you along to her class, but you don’t want to be the most inflexible in the room.

Here is my simple guide to choosing a yoga class and what to bring with you.

  1. Ask around for recommendations: Word of mouth is the best way of finding a teacher that has a good reputation.

  2. Read reviews: These days, everyone has something to say about where they’ve been, and people love to share, both the good and the bad. Most teachers have a facebook account and sometimes google business, both of which have a review section. That way you can read up and decide if they are for you.

  3. Find the right style: There are different styles of yoga, so make sure you aren’t walking into a restorative class when you want a strong class, or that you aren’t doing Ashtanga when you want relaxation! This article explains the difference in the different styles. Here

  4. Take someone with you: It can be daunting going somewhere on your own, so having a friend can make it a bit easier and it can be fun.

  5. Check what props you need: Some studios have all their own props, other places you need to bring your own. You don’t need to buy anything in particular, but a mat is essential. Other things you can swap, like a scarf for a belt and a cushion for a block.

  6. Expect to find it hard at the start: There is a misconception that yoga is easy. Even in a beginners class, you will meet challenges. You may even feel a bit sore afterwards. But don’t let this put you off. It will get easier, and might just be the best thing you ever did!

So why not try it out and see, the first step is always the hardest, but you won’t regret it.
